a woman who fell

it was rush hour and i was dashing to a train in new york city's grand central terminal - as i neared the gate, a plump, middle-aged woman sprinted up from behind, lost her footing on the smooth marble floor and slid onto her back.

her momentum carried her close to my shoes.

before i could help her, however, she had scrambled up.

gaining her composure, she winked at me and said, "do you always have beautiful women failing at your feet?"

ladies and gentlemen , good afternoon! i’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”。 i hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.

youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .

youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals.

years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wondersthe unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

good evening, everyone!

it’s a great honor for me to stand here on this special occasion to deliver a speech. today i’d like to talk about my happiness in nankai university.

i have a senior high school classmate now majoring in economy and finance in hong kong university. the other day she asked me the reason why all her friends in nankai feel extremely proud of this university while those in other schools don’t have such strong passion. i couldn’t tell the concrete reasons, but i did think a lot.

to be honest, i felt more than lucky to be admitted by school of finance in nankai, for i didn’t do well in the national entrance examination. i lost more than 40 points in physics, which got me the lowest grades and ranks throughout my senior high school life. to my relief, i don’t have to study physics in the following four years, which is definitely an extra bonus.

the first day i got here i was warmly welcomed by the whole school. as time went by, i became increasingly busy. but whenever i lost my direction or felt aimless, there was always someone encouraging me to go further. sometimes it was my parents. sometimes it was senior schoolmates. sometimes it was my teachers and instructor.

for example, this friday i hosted a knowledge contest together with four other schoolmates. it went smoothly although i made some mistakes. after the contest my instructor mr. zhang texted me by wechat to encourage me.

also, like our english team, every weekend our coaches would sacrifice their time to teach us the tips of speech. your hard work is highly appreciated.

as the saying goes, “united, we stand. divided, we fall.” i think it is unity that makes us distinguished and proud. as the school motto shows, “dedication to public interest, acquisition of all-round capability, and aspiration for progress with each day.” i’m firmly convinced that with our joint effort, my life here is getting happier with the english team, with nankai university, and with you!

that’s all. thank you for listening!

zhang jiawei, school of finance

@appreciation of debate & negociation

*speech of president clinton

#克林顿总统的演讲

first, i'd like to thank the commission and my opponents for participating in these debates and making them possible. i think the real winners of the debates were the american people. i was especially moved in richmond a few days ago, when 209 of our fellow citizens got to ask us questions. they went a long way toward reclaiming this election for the american people and taking their country back. i want to say, since this is the last time, i'll be on platform with my opponents, that even though, i disagree with mr. perot on how fast we can reduce the deficit and how much we can increase taxes in the middle class, i really respect what he's done in this campaign to bring the issue of deficit reduction to our attention. i'd like to say that mr. bush even though i have got profound differences with him, i do honor his service to our country. i appreciate his efforts and i wish him well. i just believe it's time to change. i want a country where people, who work hard and play by the rules, are rewarded, not punished. i want a country where people are coming together across the lines of race and region and income. i know we can do better. it won't take miracles and it won't happen overnight, but we can do much, much better, if we have the courage to change.

thank you very much.

it is a distressing and oppressive duty, gentlemen of the congress, which i have performed in thus addressing you. there are, it may be, many months of fiery trial and sacrifice ahead of us. it is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into way, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. but the right is more precious than peace, and we shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts─for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their government, for the dominion of right by such a concert of free peoples as shall itself at last free. to such a task we can dedicate our lives and our fortunes, everything that we are and everything we have, with the pride of those who know that the day has come when american is privileged to send her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and happiness and the peace which she has treasured. god helping her, she can do no other.

in the last analysis, every kind of peaceful cooperation among men is primarily based on mutual trust and only secondly on institution such as courts of justice and police. this holds for nations as well as for individuals. and the basis of trust is loyal give and take.

--from albert einstein:"peace in the atomic age"

i will sum up my words as follows:

the juvenile movement of youth china, as i expect, is a movement for bilingual remolding of essence, is a movement for remolding spirit and material, for breaking the intellectual classes movement, for joining in the labor union, for small organization groups on the bases of villages, and still for enlarging the reliance.

the children of young china, and the juvenile movement is the movement of remolding the world. young china's juveniles are the youth of the world.

to me march 28th was a lucky day. it was on that particular evening that i found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. winning the ”21st century·ericsson cup” seventh national english speaking competition is a memory that i shall treasure and one that will surely stay.

more important than winning the cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. also the competition helps boost public speaking in china, a skill hitherto undervalued.

for me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. habitually shy, i had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. encouraged by my friends, however, i made a last-minute decision to give it a try. in the course of preparation i somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.

i found that, after all, i like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.

at a more practical level, i realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. to take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. this ability improves with training.

yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to be recognizably yours. language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. it should be lucid to be penetrating.

in china, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?

above all, the single most important thing i learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. and second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.

only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?

i was informed afterwards that i was chosen to be the winner for my ”appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response”. in so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.

some contestants failed to address their questions head on. some were able to, but did not know where to stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. the root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. or they were thinking of what they had prepared.

as i said in my speech, ”it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way”. we need to respond honestly.

a competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. and of course, i learnt more things than just about public speaking. since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. and this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.

and the following is the final version of my speech:

globalization: opportunities and challenges for china's younger generation

thirty years ago, american president richard nixon made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time. premier zhou enlai said to him, ”your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication”. thirty years since, china and america have exchanged many handshakes. the fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of e. m. forster's words ”only connect!”

with the it revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into one large melting pot of humanity. in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

china is now actively integrating into the world. our recent entry to the wto is a good example. for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. from a precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have come a long way.

but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation's economic health.

we are reminded by karl marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. this has become a reality. multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. they are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses.

for china, still more challenges exist. how are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? how to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? how to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? and how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? globalization entails questions that concern us all.

like many young people my age in china, i want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. but it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. there might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.

good afternoon ,ladies and gentlemen!

i’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! to begin with ,i want to ask a question .does everybody dream a good dream last night? actually ,today i want to talk about dream with you. of course, what i want to talk is not a dream you have last night, but a dream—— about life.

everyone has dreams about life, different dreams at different life stage, and we need dreams to support us. dreams are like the stars we never reach in the sky,but like most mariners(水手),we can chart our course by them. with the dream,we have a direction, with a direction, we were no longer confused.with the dream, there is hope, with hope, we have the strength to fight.

i have a dream: to be a doctor.,because doctor may relieve the pain of patients. may let the human change the health. at the same time, i believed that, those who help others may be able to obtain joyfully. therefore, i hoped in the near future ,i might be a doctor.

but i know, life is tough, and there are always ups and downs, maybe we fail in the way to our aims, and we may feel depressed ,whenever at this time, the dream in our heart can always comfort us, encourage us ,and support us to move ahead .

young!fortunately, i am young now. just due to it, i know that nothing is impossible.i firmly believe that nothing can stand in my way. if i can't realize my dream,it result from that i haven't work harder enough and i won't find other excuses. if no people believe you, you can make it to prove that you are right. if you think the god haven't blessed you and there is no truth here, you can become the god and create the truth.

"my breath swallows the sky and make the yellow river overflow, my sword is famous in kyushu and it can collapse the five sacred mountains." at some time in the past i also had am bitious words and i had some achievements. each achievement results from my hard work. i always believe that "if you want to have more achievements than others, you must work harder." in some extent, the dream is the hope. if you can insist on doing something, the victory will come.

hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. so my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today. let's--- move ----out!

thank you for your listening!

imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. imagine a plane full of smoke. imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack. it sounds scary.

well i had a unique seat that day. i was sitting in 1d. i was the only one who can talk to the flight attendants. so i looked at them right away, and they said, "no problem. we probably hit some birds." the pilot had already turned the plane around, and we weren't that far. you could see manhattan.

two minutes later, 3 things happened at the same time. the pilot lines up the plane with the hudson river. that's usually not the route. he turns off the engines. now imagine being in a plane with no sound. and then he says 3 words-the most unemotional 3 words i've ever heard. he says, "brace for impact."

i didn't have to talk to the flight attendant anymore. i could see in her eyes, it was terror. life was over.

now i want to share with you 3 things i learned about myself that day.

i leant that it all changes in an instant. we have this bucket list, we have these things we want to do in life, and i thought about all the people i wanted to reach out to that i didn't, all the fences i wanted to mend, all the experiences i wanted to have and i never did. as i thought about that later on, i came up with a saying, which is, "collect bad wines". because if the wine is ready and the person is there, i'm opening it. i no longer want to postpone anything in life. and that urgency, that purpose, has really changed my life.

the second thing i learnt that day - and this is as we clear the george washington bridge, which was by not a lot - i thought about, wow, i really feel one real regret, i've lived a good life. in my own humanity and mistaked, i've tired to get better at everything i tried. but in my humanity, i also allow my ego to get in. and i regretted the time i wasted on things that did not matter with people that matter. and i thought about my relationship with my wife, my friends, with people. and after, as i reflected on that, i decided to eliminate negative energy from my life. it's not perfect, but it's a lot better. i've not had a fight with my wife in 2 years. it feels great. i no longer try to be right; i choose to be happy.

the third thing i learned - and this's as you mental clock starts going, "15, 14, 13." you can see the water coming. i'm saying, "please blow up." i don't want this thing to break in 20 pieces like you've seen in those documentaries. and as we're coming down, i had a sense of, wow, dying is not scary. it's almost like we've been preparing for it our whole lives .but it was very sad. i didn't want to go. i love my life. and that sadness really framed in one thought, which is, i only wish for one thing. i only wish i could see my kids grow up.

about a month later, i was at a perfmance by my daugter - first-grade, not much artistic talent... yet. and i 'm balling, i'm crying, like a little kid. and it made all the sense in the world to me. i realized at that point by connecting those two dots, that the only thing that matters in my life is being a great dad. above all, above all, the only goal i have in life is to be a good dad.

i was given the gift of a miracle, of not dying that day. i was given another gift, which was to be able to see into the future and come back and live differently.

i challenge you guys that are flying today, imagine the same thing happens on your plane - and please don't - but imagine, and how would you change? what would you get done that you're waiting to get done because you think you'll be here forever? how would you change your relationtships and the negative energy in them? and more than anything, are you being the best parent you can?thank you。

two dogs

a man has two dogs: a hound and a housedog. he trains the hound to help him hurt and teaches the housedog to watch the house. when he returns home after a day’s hunt, he always gives the house-dog some meat. the hound feels very angry. he says unhappily to the housedog, “where i work very hard outside, you share my food.” “don’t blame me, my friend. you should blame the master. he doesn’t teach me to hurt, but to share other’s food,” the housedog answers. don’t blame children for the mistakes of their parent

i have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. we have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. we have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. you ask, what is our aim? i can answer in one word, it is victory. victory at all costs—victory in spite of all terrors—victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival. let that be realized, no survival for the british empire, no survival for all that british empire has stood for , no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall more forward toward his goal. i take up my task in buoyancy and hope. i feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. i feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, “come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.”

as an elementary school teacher, my mom did everything she could to ensure i had good reading skills. this usually consisted of weekend reading lessons at our kitchen table while my friends played outside. my reading ability improved, but these forced reading lessons didn't exactly inspire a love of reading.

high school changed everything. in 10th grade, my regular english class read short stories and did spelling tests. out of sheer boredom, i asked to be switched into another class. the next semester,i joined advanced english.

we read two novels and wrote two book reports that semester. the drastic difference and rigor between these two english classes angered me and spurred questions like, "where did all these white people come from?"

my high school was over 70 percent black and latino, but this advanced english class had white students everywhere. this personal encounter with institutionalized racism altered my relationship with reading forever. i learned that i couldn't depend on a school, a teacher or curriculum to teach me what i needed to know. and more out of like, rebellion, than being in tell ectual, i decided i would no longer allow other people to dictate when and what i read. and without realizing it, i had stumbled upon a key to helping children read. identity.

instead of fixating on skills and moving students from one reading level to another, or forcing struggling readers to memorize lists of unfamiliar words, we should be asking ourselves this question: how can we inspire children to identify as readers?

desean, a brilliant first-grader i taught in the bronx, he helped me understand how identity shapes learning. one day during math, i walk up to desean, and i say, "desean, you're a great mathematician." he looks at me and responds, "i'm not a mathematician, i'm a math genius!"

ok desean, right? reading? completely different story. "mr. irby, i can't read. i'm never going to learn toread," he would say. i taught desean to read, but there are count less black boys who remain trapped in illiteracy. according to the us department of education, more than 85 percent of black male fourth graders are not proficientin reading.

85 percent! the more challenges to reading children face, the more culturally competent educators need to be. moonlighting as a stand-up comedianfor the past eight years, i understand the importance of cultural competency, which i define as the ability to translate what you want someone else to knowor be able to do into communication or experiences that they find relevant andengaging.

before going on stage, i assess an audience. are they white, are they latino? are they old, young, professional, conservative? then i curate and modify my jokes based on what i think would generate the most laughter. whileperforming in a church, i could tell bar jokes. but that might not result inlaughter.

as a society, we're creating reading experiences for children that are the equivalent of telling bar jokes in achurch. and then we wonder why so many children don't read. educator and philosopher paulo freire believed that teaching and learning should be two-way.students shouldn't be viewed as empty buckets to be filled with facts but as cocreators of knowledge.

cookie-cutter curriculums and school policies that require students to sit statue-still or to work in complete silence -- these environments often exclude the individual learning needs, theinterest and expertise of children. especially black boys.

many of the children's books promoted to black boys focus on serious topics, like slavery, civil rights and biographies.less than two percent of teachers in the united states are black males. and a majority of black boys are raised by single mothers. there are literally young black boys who have never seen a black man reading. or never had a black manencourage him to read. what cultural factors, what social cues are present thatwould lead a young black boy to conclude that reading is even something he should do?

this is why i created barbershop books.it's a literacy non profit that creates child-friendly reading spaces in barbershops. the mission is simple: to help young black boys identify as readers.lots of black boys go to the barber shop once or twice a month.

some see their barbers more than they see their fathers. barbershop books connects reading toa male-centered space and involves black men and boys' early reading experiences. this identity-based reading program uses a curated list ofchildren's books recommended by black boys. these are the books that they actually want to read.

scholastic's 20xx kids and family report found that the number one thing children look for when choosing a book is abook that will make them laugh. so if we're serious about helping black boysand other children to read when it's not required, we need to incorporate relevant male reading models into early literacy and exchange some of thechildren's books that adults love so much for funny, silly or even gross books, like "gross greg".

"you call them boogers. greg callsthem delicious little sugars."

that laugh, that positive reaction or grossreaction some of you just had, black boys deserve and desperately needmore of that.

dismantling the savage inequalities thatplague american education requires us to create reading experiences thatinspire all children to say three words: i'm a reader.

thank you.(applause)

every child has a good and great father, and so do i. my dad played a very important role in my daily life`````exactly speaking, in my past 16 years.

my father always stands in the center of my life, from past till now and possibly in the future.

my family was rather poor when i was in my childhood. we didn't have our own house and had to live in a shabby, small room rented from my father's factory. the room was so small that there was little space for people to walk. i didn't have my own bed and had to sleep with my parents. this is terrible both for my parents and me.

but father made this all different!he works very hard on his own business, now we have our own 2 housese, surly,i have my own room.and he take our family so much happiness, richer and richer.

when i was little, i did everything with my dad. you could always find me sitting on his knee or walking and doing everything with him. every night he would read me a bed time story and make the voices of each character.

i learnt a lot from my daddy. i learnt to never take things to seriously and to always smile.

like many other fathers, my dad and i also has generation gap. he is not good at or even can’t work the computer. so when i sitting at the computer desk,he will say something like ‘you should pay more attention to your study’, ‘don’t waste time on the computer games’ , ‘it will be bad for your eyes’ and so on. how can i- a computer fan – reduce time on computer? so i continue studying and playing on it

years pasted, my father is over 45 now. it is time for me to look after him and i am sure i will do and we will live an even better life. and i will say,i really love you dad, cause you are the hero in my mind.

thank you so much!

recently, ther is a heated debate in our society.the college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places.but will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds?will we be able to better the lives of others?will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?

the cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort.but the cynics are wrong.the college students i see are eagerly learning about how to live independently.we help each other clean the dormitory,go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.

the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades;and we neglect the need for character cultivation.but again, the cynics are wrong.we care deeply for each other,we cherish freedom,we treasure justice, and we seek truth.last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

as college students,we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives.we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future,or even the future of our country.i believe in all my fellow classmates.though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish.i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities.we are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place.i believe in our future.

thank you!

as we all know, smoking is not only bad for our health, but also bad for our society.therefore, our govrenment has publish an ban about forbid people smoke at the public place form 2011.1.1,including the indoor pulic placces, indoor public workplaces and pulic transport means.this ban will first come into power in the medical system.

in order to make this ban come into power,we should do what we can to reduce the behavior of smoke around us.we can put up some posteres at public places to aware people this is no-somking place.perhaps the most important ,and most easyist thing that we can do is we won't be a smoker.

it has a long and hard way to forbid somke, but i believe that if everyone follw this ban and take a googd care of their behavior,we will have a clear sky soon.

should smoking in public places be banned?

nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. however, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. as far as i’m concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares.

on the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. it is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. on the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country’s image in the world.

i believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. and the health condition of all the people will be greatly improved.

a survey about smokers in a middle school tells that although 90% of all students never smoke, 3% of them often smoke and 7% sometimes do. in other words, 10% of the students smoke. that’s terrible.

as we know, smoking is harmful to our health. every year, thousands of people lose their lives because of it. smoking not only does harm to your health, but also wastes money. because, a fire may be caused by cigarette ends. it’s a pity to learn that one ends in death by smoking.

in all, smoking is so dangerous that we should keep away from it.

as i held the container of pills, the scene of dad struggling to remove the cap and indesperation trying to break it with the brick flashed painfully before my eyes. with deepanguish i knew why those big hands had lost in their struggle with death. for there, imprintedon the cap, were the words:“child-proof cap--push down and twist to unlock. ”

the druggist later confirmed that he had just started using the new safety caps.

i knew it was not a rational act, but i went right downtown and bought a leather-boundpocket dictionary and a gold pen set. i bade dad good-bye by placing them in those big hands, once so warm, which had lived so well, but had never learned to write.
